Books about town
During the summer of 2014 I was involved in designing and painting a piece of public art for a Wild In Art project called 'Books about Town'. My 'Paddington Bear' BookBench formed a large art trail around London and mine was on display near London Bridge overlooking the River Thames. Over the summer of 2014 trails of 50 benches shaped as open books, decorated by professional illustrators and local artists appeared for the public to enjoy. It was a unique opportunity to explore the capital’s literary connections, to enjoy art from some of the country’s top artists and to celebrate reading for enjoyment.
After the trail, all of the BookBenches went to auction. I still can't believe that my Paddington Bear BookBench sold for £8,800!! That was the fourth highest price paid and it even beat Ralph Steadman's BookBench! Incredible.
The auction was held at The Southbank Centre in London with all the benches raising a total of £251,000! That money went to The National Literacy Trust, a charity that aims to increase literacy levels in the most deprived areas of Britain.
