WHAT IS A GICLÉE PRINT?
Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clays”) is a French term meaning “to spray”, referring to how an inkjet printer works and how giclée prints are usually produced. These large format inkjet printers use small spraying devices that can both match colour and apply ink precisely, giving artists a high-quality print of their original art
To be able to make such a high-quality print, the camera or scanner used to capture or scan the art must be able to do so with a high level of resolution. To compare, most digital photos are recorded at a resolution of 72 DPI on the screen, or “dots per inch,” and the image file of an art print needs to be at least 300 DPI - because the more dots of colour that can be printed in a small area, the more detailed your final image will appear. I scan all of my original paintings at 600dpi to allow as much detail from the painting as possible. The clarity is something else, they look and feel 'painted'.
I then spend time digitally-stitching each scan together, carefully checking for any flaws before printing onto papers specially chosen for their hardiness & conservation/archival qualities. The paper will be appropriate to the specific image chosen and will not fade, yellow or deteriorate under normal conditions. The final print will be approved by me. Those reproductions considered inferior will be destroyed. Approval will be attested to by myself by signing each print and giving the print its own number within the edition
(usually between 50 and 150).
What one will acquire, is a signed top quality limited reproduction of the original painting that will not diminish over time (so long as proper care is taken - see below). Also, an image so close in textural resemblance to the original you could think it was a painting.
Displaying your prints
To increase the longevity of your print, please ensure the image is framed appropriately using only acid free materials and displayed behind UV glass. Prints should not be displayed in direct sunlight or above a heat source such as a radiator and must be kept in a cool dry environment free from airborne pollutants.
